Not TOO big on Scotch...
...but I wouldn't turn down a Guinness if my life depended on it.
I had one of those Mr. Brew brewing kits a few years back. The beer was OK. I'd like to get into a slightly more sophistcated way of brewing beer.
I recently sampled that new Heineken Mini-Keg. I must say it was VERY good and the keg was simple to operate. It fits in the fridge amongst the sippy cups very well.
Scotch and such
Well I was in Scotland last year and took a tour visiting the different distilleries while I can tell you that I really enjoyed the tour and the different tastes I can’t help but feel like it was a little wasted on me. I believe that I just don’t have a developed enough palette to be able to taste all the differences that I should have tasted. Don’t get me wrong I will still keep trying but for right now I will stick to what I know and enjoy all that Beer has to offer.
re: Scotch
Took a tour myself. Scotland was amazing and it's incredible how some of the world's most renowned distilleries hold up entire little towns on their own (i.e. Tallisker).
HOWEVER, I had a hard time enjoying the flavors as well...I seriously put forth a solid effort too. Since then I've learned to enjoy a glass on the rocks. Just let it chill and water down for a few minutes before the first sip, you'll soon be addicted.
Now if I could only take that distillery tour again...
beer man as well
I'd love to find out how to brew my own. Although, JW Dundee does a fine job, and who can aspire to Guinness quality?
Re: beer man as well
Guinness is nice, but what about Murphys or Boddingtons? With regard to brewing your own, there are home brew companies out there who have all the gear and ingredients in house - show up and brew. I live in Metro-West MA and we have a few choices of places to go. Usually it is a 2 day deal. Day one you brew, then the beer rests, then day two you bottle.
Cheers,
Toby
home brew
You can get a pretty nice home brew kit from Sam Adams to get you started. Then after you have a few batches under your belt, go your local library and get some books on brewing. Mess with recipes and ingredients. A friend of mine has been home brewing rather successfully for several years now and produces some really wonderful stuff.
cool!
Thanks for the info!
Balevenie
I was given a bottle of scotch upon leaving my last job. It is bar none the best scotch I have ever had. its is pricy but well worth keeping around the house for a snifter after the day is done.
Re: Balevenie
A very good one no doubt. Check out Macallan 18; so, so fine(single malt). On a cheaper note, The Dimple Pinch (blend)
Cheers,
Toby
Bring on the Small Batch Bourbons!
Give me a Knob Creek any day...B-)
Scotch by any other name
For the past few years I have really grown a taste for scotch and whiskey. For my graduation my wife gave me a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue and it is wonderful. Although I can not say that prefer single malt to blended malts. I think the length of time the scotch is aged is far more important.

Single malts
Johnny Walker Blue, what a gift!!!!
My preference for a more affordable alternative is Glenlivet.
Enjoy.
A funny story about JW Blue
A funny story about JW Blue in my house. Several years ago, I received a bottle of JW Blue as a gift. I was planning on opening it for a special occasion so I kept it in my liquor cabinet for "the right time". Fast forward 1.5 yrs. later, my then girlfriend needed a gift for a secret santa gift with the girls ($25. max). I told her to just grab an unopened bottle of booze from the cabinet. Well, she did!! Unfortunately, she grabbed the JW Blue and some lucky gal pal of hers is now enjoying my Blue and my girlfriend got a stunning gift basket of lotions in its place.
She and I are no longer together!!!
Single malt
I don't have extensive experience with single malts, however I love the stuff. For the past 3-4 years I've always had a bottle of Glenlivet around the house as a staple, and i try higher-end stuff whenever i can and I'm working to develop my palette. I try to have different single malts side by side to help distinguish the tastes. My recent favorite is Dalwhinnie; I got a bottle of 15 year and received a bottle of 18 year as a gift. Both are lovely.
Single Malt
First post here so forgive me if I screw something up - you can't go wrong with a good single malt scotch. There are thousands out there but some of my favorites are Bowmore and Edradour. Glenlivet has a new style coming out that goes through unchilled filtering which I'm looking forward to.
Beer...
I am as well, but given my druthers...
I am making my first beer soon...I'll let you know how it turns out...
