4 Money Mistakes We Make with Our Kids

I sometimes wonder if we started too early, if there is such a thing. Our 2.5 year old is swiping playcards through a play cash register. He tells me to slow down on the road or else "police catch us, daddy pay money." After we eat, we is more than eager to be the one to give the credit card to the waitress.

What I did with my two sons, now 13 & 6, was to explain to them - early on - how jobs equal money.

When my oldest was 5 he asked me why I went to work, coincidentally during a stop off at a McDonalds for lunch. Having seen mom pay for groceries, he wasn't unfamiliar with paying for food, so from there I taught him that I go to work to do a job to get paid. I use that money to pay for gas, electric, and his Happy Meal. Suddenly, it all made sense to him. I used the same reasoning on his brother about year or so ago, and he took to it well.

The sooner kids understand the basics of how/why people work, the better they'll be down the road.

Great link!

I have been thinking a lot about this subject. How to explain to my daughter what I do and what money does is going to be interesting.
