Why children need sports

Toby's picture

Greetings dads, For those who have not seen the movie "Miracle," get it TODAY! My favorite scene is when Herb Brooks skates his boys to their knees and says this famous line: "When you pull on that jersey, remember the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back!" This is the lesson children, and their parents, will learn through sports. It does not matter your nationality, color, political party, or last name; to be a member of a team, one must be able to play and get along with those on the team. Children learn how to deal with winning and losing - lessons that seem to be vanishing to today's "I'm entitled" culture. Get your kids involved, you don't have to be the dad that coaches the team, but go to backyard, go to practice, go to the games. Sports do not only keep your kids healthy, sports develop their character. Cheers, Toby

Re: Why children need sports

I am a father of a six year old girl and she has been involved in sports for a couple of years now. It absolutely drives me crazy watching these games where they are not keeping score. It is all a very new concept for me. Growing up we kept score at everything, even if we were just running around in the backyard. If you lost the first time at whatever you were doing, then it was best 2 out of 3. It was not "Well, we tied. Let's go have juices." It taught you to push yourself harder to better yourself. It teaches the good kind of competitiveness. It carries over to everything we do, classroom, jobs, etc. You strive to be the best you can be. You learn that if you lose at something, you can look at it with your head held high knowing you gave it your best shot. I agree with all young kids getting involved in some kind of healthy competition with good sportsmanship, no matter if is sports or not. Learn how to win and lose with class from an early age. This goes for the parents too. If your child loses at something, don't start balming everything from the officials, umpires, or refs, to the coaches. This dives into a whole other issue. Just remember your children are sponges and soak up everything we as parents dish out. Whether we agree or disagree, just teach them to enjoy the time spend playing and competing, win or lose.

Jason,
What I find funny is the kids are keeping score.

I completely agree! I also agree with New-Dad-Blog and his contempt for the whole "everybody wins" attitude. Unfortunately, in life, we all lose sometimes, and it helps to understand this from an early age so it doesn't blindside you when you lose at something that is more important, like getting that scholarship, or earning that promotion.

totally with you on this. there's so many lessons to be learned that can only be learned through losing and winning - how to be gracious at both. And Adam at new-dad-blog is right on - I experienced that as well playing middle & hs school sports. sometimes kids surprise even themselves when they push a little harder, especially when they see everyone else pushing hard with them. the "good" kind of peer pressure.

Re: Why children need sports

Your are so right. Kids need to learn how to lose and win. No more "We're not keeping score so no one's self esteem is hurt"! We're breeding a nation of wusses! When I was in 3rd grade our little league team got our asses handed to us, so the coach made us all practice twice as hard and twice as much. And guess what? We played better! You'll never know to push yourself if you're alway a winner.

From the point of view of having a little girl I am especially interested in her participating in sports. Studies show girls who play sports are less likely to be promiscuous, have better grades and don't abuse alcohol and drugs as much as those who don't play.
